Friday Inspiration from Dénia

While exploring the ruins of the old castle in Dénia, Spain, I came across this striking artwork at the entrance. Not a painting, but a drawing.

This is a reproduction of a Renaissance sketch done using sanguine, a red chalk drawing technique that was widely used during the 15th and 16th centuries. Artists like Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo often used it for preparatory studies before creating frescoes, paintings, or sculptures.

Why red chalk? It allowed for soft, expressive lines and depth -perfect for capturing emotion and movement, just like in this scene of people boarding a ship. It’s a quiet yet powerful reminder that once upon a time, this was how stories were told - with nothing but chalk and genius.

Drawings made with sanguine (red chalk) - can still be found on the art market today.

These works, often centuries old, appear in auctions and galleries around the world. Despite their age, they remain highly sought after by collectors and art lovers alike for their delicate lines, warmth, and historical value.

A timeless technique, still appreciated in our modern world.
